Former Secretary of State, James Baker, developed a model called The Five P’s, which stands for “Proper, Preparation, Prevents Poor Performance”. The better you prepare, the more likely you are to succeed. Simple. Fail to prepare, and you’ll fail to perform, or at least, not to your potential.
As a Career Coach for Early Engagement here at the C3, I have witnessed firsthand the immense impact that early career development can have on your future success. It’s never too early to start thinking about your career goals and taking steps to achieve them. Think about it – if 85% of jobs are found through networking, and you start building your network now, in your early days as a Gator, wouldn’t you be able to leverage that vast network in a more powerful way when you start looking for jobs post-graduation? The answer is yes.
But if you’re still not convinced you should start your career development sooner rather than later, here are some clear-cut and compelling reasons why early career development is crucial:
- Finding Your Values: By exploring your interests, skills, and values early on, you can ensure the career path you embark on is aligned with how you want to make an impact on your industry. Using assessment tools like CHOMP and O*NET Interest Profiler can be helpful in this area.
- Gaining Valuable Experience: Early career development provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable experience through internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, research and shadowing opportunities. These experiences not only enhance your resume but also help you develop essential skills that many employers actively look for in candidates.
- Networking: Building a professional network is essential for career success. Joining student organizations, attending networking events and career fairs, especially our bi-annual Career Week, and especially Career Showcase, which is the largest career fair in the Southeast U.S.! - Setting Clear Goals: A fulfilling career won’t just fall in your lap. Identifying clear, achievable goals for the future is a key component too. Whether you aspire to work for a specific company, pursue further education, or start your own business, setting goals early can help you stay focused and motivated. - Read The Job Market: Another crucial component in taking your first steps in career development is understanding the job market within your industry. Reading industry trends, job postings, and company profiles can give you valuable insights into the skills and qualifications employers are looking for. By staying informed, you can tailor your efforts to meet current and future market demands.
- Increasing Confidence: Developing skills in interviewing, job searching, networking and everything in between early in your time as a student can boost your confidence and self-esteem. As you gain additional experience and skills throughout your time at UF, you will feel more prepared and confident in pursuing your career goals.
- Developing Skills for the Future of Work: Gone are the days of walking across the graduation stage, a diploma in one hand and a job offer in the other. Soft skills are more important now than ever and employers are putting that into practice. In 2024, LinkedIn Learning identified communication, customer service and leadership as the top-three most in-demand job skills in the country.
