A professionally dressed student greets two recruiters at a career fair
Get ready for career fairs this fall

Attending a career fair can be a game-changer in your job search journey. Career fairs are an excellent opportunity to connect with potential employers, learn about job openings, and make a positive impression.

The Career Connections Center hosts over 10 career fairs every year, with other UF colleges and outside groups offering numerous opportunities you may also wish to join. Check out upcoming UF career fairs. Whatever fairs you choose to attend, here’s a guide to help you prepare and shine.

Before the Fair

Research Employers

  • Use Multiple Sources: Check Gator CareerLink or the Symplicity Jobs & Careers app, LinkedIn, and company websites to gather information. Research job market trends on Career Hub.
  • Know Key Details: Look up the company’s mission, values, job postings, and what makes you a good fit for their roles.
  • Make a List: Identify 4-6 companies you want to engage with. Categorize them into must-see, interested, and low priority, and make notes about your questions and talking points for each company.

Polish Your Resume

  • Tailor It: Customize your resume for the types of jobs you’re interested in.
  • Keep It Concise: Stick to one page and ensure it’s free of errors.
  • Get Feedback: Use resources like Quinncia or Express Drop-In to refine your resume.

Plan Your Professional Attire

  • Dress Appropriately: Business professional is the way to go. Use the Molm Family Gator Career Closet if you need professional attire.
  • Be Presentable: Ensure your clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, and fit well.

Prepare Your Professional Introduction

  • Craft Your Pitch: Your introduction should include who you are, your achievements, and what you’re looking for at the fair. Outline your pitch using the tips in our Professional Introduction Guide.
  • Be Confident and Conversational: Practice delivering your introduction naturally.

During the Fair

Engage with Employers

  • Lead with Your Introduction: Start conversations with your polished introduction.
  • Discuss Your Experiences: Be prepared to talk about your resume and experiences.
  • Listen Actively: Show genuine interest and ask insightful questions.
  • Clarify Next Steps: Understand the application process and follow up appropriately.
  • Express Gratitude: Always thank the employers for their time.

Utilize On-Site Resources

At Career Week events, the Career Connections Center offers specialized resources to help you feel confident and prepared:

  • Student Prep & Info Stations: Freshen up or get help in case of a wardrobe mishap, print a nametag, and learn about participating employers and where they’re located.
  • Bag Drop: Take advantage of the bag drop to keep your hands free.

At all career fairs, Career Connections Center staff are available to answer your questions and help you navigate the event successfully.

After the Fair & Follow Up

  • Check Your Messages: Look out for any follow-up emails or voicemails from employers.
  • Send Thank You Notes: Express your appreciation to the employers you spoke with.
  • Review and Complete Action Steps: Apply for positions and continue to engage with companies through Gator CareerLink.

Final Tips for New UF Students

  • Observe and Learn: Watch how other students interact with recruiters.
  • Build Connections: Network early to improve your skills and knowledge about different companies.
  • Ask About Programs: Inquire about career discovery or leadership programs for students earlier in their careers.
  • Map Your Future: Use the information gathered to plan your career path.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most out of your career fair experience. If you need additional assistance, schedule a Career Planning Appointment with a career coach using Gator CareerLink.
