On Friday, February 7, 2025, the Career Connections Center collaborated with UF International Student Services to host a virtual event within our International Student Series. The session was to provide an overview and education to about the CPT/OPT process for international students here at the University of Florida.

Workshop Summary
Edwina Hurst, the Sr. Manager for Experiential Learning at the University of Florida’s Career Connections Center, discussed the center’s mission and resources available to students, including career pathways and experiential learning opportunities. Martine Angrand, the Director of F-1 International Student Services at UF’s International Center, then took over the presentation, focusing on the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program for F-1 students, including the standard 12-month OPT and STEM OPT. Martine also explained the application process for OPT and STEM OPT, the eligibility criteria, and the rules for maintaining F-1 status while on OPT.
Next Steps for Students
- Students to apply for standard OPT within 90 days before graduation through the ISS Portal.
- Students to read through all OPT application materials and instructions on the International Center website before applying.
- Students to ensure their I-20 is valid and F-1 status is maintained before applying for OPT.
- Students to order official transcripts and obtain diploma for STEM OPT application.
- Students to update personal and employment information in the portal while on OPT.
- Students to attend virtual office hours or email their F-1 advisor for specific questions about their OPT application.
