Painting With Purpose: Uniting UF Students and Veterans Through Art

What happens when you mix paint, creativity, and a room full of students and veterans? A masterpiece of community, connection, and camaraderie!

The Brown Center for Leadership and Service (BCLS) and the Collegiate Veterans Success Center (CVSC) recently hosted a free painting workshop in the Connections Room at the C3. This event brought together UF students and local veterans for an afternoon of artistic expression, meaningful conversations, and shared experiences.

While the canvases started blank, they quickly transformed into vibrant reflections of individuality and unity. And just like the paintings, the event itself became a beautiful blend of people from all backgrounds coming together to create something special.

More Than Just a Painting Class

One of the most touching aspects of the event? The overwhelming support from non-veteran students.

“No matter how talented they were, they just wanted to give back to the community. There were more non-veterans than actual veterans. I was really, really happy about that.”

shared Jesus Batista, the C3 Manager for Industry Engagement and Marine Corps Veteran.

Veterans and students alike embraced the welcoming environment, making new connections and sharing stories. “It was a nice way for civilians to give back and veterans to connect.”

Some veterans even brought their families, adding an extra layer of warmth to the gathering. One of the most heartwarming moments? A roughly six-year-old daughter of a veteran joyfully painting alongside her parent. “She was just adorable.”

A Lasting Impact

Beyond the artwork, this event was about giving back in a way that truly matters.

“You are giving them something positive, which can really make a difference in their life. I find that really nice, too.”

shared Jesus Batista, the C3 Manager for Industry Engagement and Marine Corps Veteran.

From bold strokes of color to shared laughter, the painting workshop showcased the power of community. Whether you were a seasoned artist or just there to try something new, everyone left with more than just a painting—they left with a deeper appreciation for our veterans and a reminder that small acts of connection can have a lasting impact.

To further extend the spirit of giving, the paintings were delivered to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, ensuring that the artwork and appreciation reached even more veterans beyond campus.
