Gator Career Chat: Careers in Management (event recording and recap)

Three UF alumni joined our Gator Career Chat: Careers in Management workshop to discuss their career journeys and how they grew from individual contributors to leaders in their various industries. Devin Bellamy has worked with Expedia and Linktree, and currently leads the integrated marketing team at GoFundMe. Heather Blum graduated from UF in 2017 and currently leads a team of 15 individuals at Strada Global. Matt Sobieski has had various operations roles, including at Iverson Consulting Group and a recent move to Trailers Plus as the head of operations.

Balancing Work and Life in Management

The panelists discussed how their careers in management have allowed for work-life balance and shared strategies for maintaining it. Matt emphasized the importance of setting boundaries and having open communication with your team about availability. Heather mentioned that management roles often provide more flexibility to adjust schedules as needed. Devin noted that while management can be demanding at times, it also allows for delegating tasks and empowering team members. All three agreed that prioritization skills and time management are crucial for balancing work and personal life in management positions. They advised being intentional about carving out time for oneself and family outside of work hours.

Handling Difficult Employee Situations

The panelists discussed approaches to handling difficult employee situations and providing feedback. They emphasized the importance of regular communication to avoid surprises, basing decisions on facts and data rather than emotions, and practicing difficult conversations beforehand. Heather recommended documenting feedback and using performance improvement plans. Matt suggested reframing nervousness about tough conversations as excitement for growth opportunities. The panelists agreed that managers should seek to understand employee perspectives, provide clear paths for improvement, and utilize organizational resources when addressing performance issues or conflicts.

Career Paths and Leadership Development

The panelists also shared about their transition from individual contributor roles to management roles. Heather emphasized the importance of learning the business before taking on a management role and encouraged employees to communicate their career aspirations to their managers. Matt agreed, adding that patience is crucial in career growth and that seeking out opportunities to lead and contribute can help individuals stand out for management roles. Devin suggested that employees should trust their skills and perspectives, and not be afraid to raise their hand for opportunities. The panelists also recommended Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as a valuable resource for leadership development.
