Exploring Career Pathways in Greater Fort Lauderdale: A Spring Break Trek to the Tech Hub

Over spring break, the UF Career Connections Center (C3), in collaboration with The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, led 36 University of Florida students on a two-day immersive Career Trek to the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The experience offered valuable insights into the region’s growing technology sector and the increasing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping future careers.

“It was a great way to spend a day with some brilliant STEM students from UF, discussing the ins and outs of the science and technology profession, learning about their plans and dreams, and providing insight from the engineering business sector perspective. Looking forward to supporting more events like this in the future!”
Christopher, VP of Engineering

A Focus on Technology and Innovation

The trek highlighted the evolving intersection of technology and business. Students toured innovative companies like CITY Furniture, where they saw firsthand how technology is transforming operations and customer experiences. They also engaged in roundtable discussions with industry leaders—creating space for questions, mentorship, and a deeper understanding of the skills needed in today’s tech-driven economy.

“This incredible trip provided an amazing opportunity to meet and network with so many talented individuals and companies while exploring the incredible Fort Lauderdale business community. One of the highlights was touring the CITY Furniture office—such an eye-opening experience!”

Building Connections and Networking

Networking played a central role in the experience. Students attended a mocktail mingle with Gator alumni and industry professionals in a relaxed, welcoming setting that encouraged authentic relationship-building. The trek culminated in a scenic water taxi tour, where conversations continued against the backdrop of Fort Lauderdale’s waterfront.

A Unique Blend of Technology and Environmental Innovation

On Day Two, students visited Wahoo Bay and snorkeled near an artificial seawall created by Seahive International. This stop introduced them to the innovative intersection of technology and environmental sustainability—highlighting emerging careers in climate tech and the blue economy.

“From boardrooms to coral reefs, this Spring Break was a perfect blend of career exploration and embracing new adventures.”
Shaun, student participant

A Career Trek That’s More Than Just a Trip

This Career Trek was more than a chance to explore career options—it was an opportunity for students to grow personally and professionally. Through candid conversations with industry leaders, they gained authentic insight into career journeys, industry expectations, and real-world challenges.

“This wasn’t just about internships; it was about building meaningful relationships that can turn into real opportunities—winter break projects, summer internships, or even long-term careers.”
Rob, panel member

Looking Ahead

This Career Trek reinforced how powerful it can be for students to connect with industry professionals—gaining real-world perspectives, expanding their networks, and discovering tangible opportunities to shape their futures. Through roundtable discussions and a vibrant mocktail mingle, students met with representatives from companies such as Crown Castle, OZ, ARK Solvers Cybersecurity, Broward Health, PeakActivity, Amazon Web Services (AWS), The Crockett Foundation, AutoNation, and more.
