So summer is right around the corner — and if you’re anything like I was as a second-year student without an internship lined up, you might be feeling a little anxious. But don’t worry—you’re not behind at all! There are still plenty of ways to gain valuable experience, build up your resume, and explore your interests.
Here are three meaningful (and free!) ways to build skills this summer:
1. Try a Forage Job Simulation
Not sure what working in a specific field really looks like? Forage offers free virtual job simulations designed by top companies like JPMorgan Chase, BCG, and Accenture. These short simulations let you explore different career paths and practice real-world tasks—on your schedule, at your own pace. Forage even compiles related job simulations into career paths that can give you a comprehensive understanding of what it is like to work in a given industry. Plus, you can add your completed simulations to your resume or LinkedIn profile.
As an added bonus, some companies on Forage will actually be able to recruit you based on your completion of a simulation! How cool is that?!
2. Secure LinkedIn Learning Certifications
Take advantage of LinkedIn Learning, which offers free access to thousands of courses for UF students. These course can be added directly to your LinkedIn profile and resume, as well as equip you with the necessary skills for standing out to employers.
Consider taking these courses:
- Networking Foundations: Enhance your interpersonal skills by mastering effective networking techniques.
- Teamwork Foundations: Learn the essentials of collaborating effectively in team settings.
- Rock Your LinkedIn Profile: Optimize your LinkedIn profile to connect with potential employers and showcase your skills.
- Cultivating a Growth Mindset: Gain key skills in forward-thinking and crafting a path towards career growth.
By actively engaging with these resources and seeking out hands-on experiences, you’ll be setting yourself apart and taking confident steps toward career success.
3. Get Involved with Gators for Good
Use your summer to make a difference with Gators For Good, a University of Florida platform powered by the Brown Center for Leadership and Service that connects students to volunteer opportunities. Whether you’re looking to volunteer on or off campus, this is a great way to show future employers your commitment to community and leadership.
4. Build Your Personal Brand
Summer is the perfect time to define and share your professional identity. Start by updating your LinkedIn and GatorNetwork profiles with any academic or professional achievements you accomplished this school year. Be sure to add those Forage simulations and the volunteer opportunities you engage with as well. No matter what your desired career path is, building your personal brand helps you stand out—and gives employers a clear picture of what you’re all about.
In short, don’t underestimate the power of initiative. Whether you’re gaining experience through volunteering, virtual projects, or personal branding, what matters most is how you frame what you did and what you learned.
