What is STEAM?
Science

With so many specializations to explore, science majors can shape a career that aligns with their passions and sets them apart with deep, unique expertise.
Technology
Technology is all about innovation and using digital tools to improve how we live and work. From software development to cybersecurity, careers in tech are fast-growing and diverse. This field also connects with nearly every other industry—making tech skills highly valuable no matter your career goals.
Engineering
Engineering blends science, technology, and math to design solutions for real-world problems. Whether you’re building safer infrastructure or exploring space tech, engineering is about creating, testing, and improving systems that make an impact. It’s a field where curiosity meets creativity.
Arts
The Arts in STEAM highlight the importance of creativity and design in science and tech innovation. At UF, this could mean careers in software design, digital media, or product development—where artistic thinking enhances user experience and drives visual storytelling, design thinking, and human-centered solutions. Creativity is essential in everything from coding to communication.
Mathematics
Math careers revolve around problem-solving, pattern recognition, and data analysis. From statistics to algorithms, math helps explain how systems work and guides informed decision-making. It’s also a core part of every STEM discipline—making it a powerful tool for innovation across the board.
What’s the Difference Between STEM and STEAM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—fields that focus on research, innovation, and problem-solving through logical reasoning, data, and experimentation.
STEAM adds an “A” for the Arts, recognizing the importance of creativity, design thinking, and human expression in technical fields. It’s not about replacing science with art—it’s about enhancing STEM with creativity.
At the University of Florida, STEAM might look like:
• Combining coding and visual storytelling in Digital Arts & Sciences
• Merging engineering and aesthetics in product design
• Applying data visualization and UX design in software development
In short, STEM builds the foundation, while STEAM adds the imagination that makes innovation more human-centered.

I’m Crystal, the Assistant Director for Career Pathways – STEM here at the Career Connections Center. I’m passionate about helping students like you navigate your career journey—whether you’re exploring options, prepping for an interview, or chasing your dream job in STEM (or beyond!).
With a background in teaching and career services, I’ve spent years supporting students through career coaching, employer connections, and program development. I also serve as a Certified Federal Advisor, so if you’re curious about federal careers, I’ve got you covered.
Fun fact: I’ve been cheering on the Gators for over 25 years and recently became a proud Gator Mom! Outside of work, I’m usually hanging with my college kids and two pups, watching sports, or planning my next travel adventure.

I’m here to support you in aligning your career journey with who you truly are—not just through résumés and job boards, but by helping you explore what meaningful experiences, opportunities, and connections can look like.
I’m a proud UF alum with a degree in Psychology, a minor in Classics, and I completed Pre-Dental coursework—so I know a thing or two about navigating multiple interests!
A couple fun facts: my favorite way to connect with my siblings is through online gaming, and I’m always up for a good escape room challenge.
