How One Workshop Explored the Link Between Curiosity and Career Success
Curiosity isn’t just a personality trait. It’s a career accelerator. In a recent workshop titled “Curiosity, Your Secret Tech Superpower,” students explored how a curious mindset fuels essential career development skills and opens doors across industries.
Led by Karissa, Career Pathways Coach – STEAM, the session focused on curiosity as an essential skill. Although curiosity itself is an essential skill, it is made up of other essential skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, and growth mindset. These non-technical skills are increasingly valued by employers for their versatility and impact.
Through interactive exercises, like identifying zoomed-in images and decoding ambiguous drawings, students practiced active listening, asked clarifying questions, and embraced uncertainty. One memorable moment involved a drawing initially mistaken for a cheeseburger bun, which turned out to be a hot dog. The takeaway? Curiosity thrives when we slow down, observe closely, and stay open to new interpretations.
Karissa also highlighted how students already build these skills through volunteering, internships, research, and involvement in student organizations. These experiences build a strong foundation for career readiness and personal growth.
So how can you strengthen your essential skills and make them part of your everyday routine?
Start by staying curious. Ask questions, seek feedback, and explore new challenges. Your next opportunity to practice might be closer than you think.
