What We Covered

This wasn’t your average panel. It felt more like a real conversation. It was filled with personal stories, relatable moments, and career lessons you don’t always hear in class.

The panelists—Ella, Alisha, Demi, Brianne, and Lorena (A rising CJC Senior!)—came from different corners of the communications world, and their paths weren’t always linear. Some thought they’d work in fashion, others considered healthcare. What brought them together? Curiosity, creativity, and the decision to lean into new opportunities.

Key Themes & Advice

1. Start Where You Are—It’s Enough

Not sure what you want to do? That’s normal. Many panelists didn’t figure it out until well into college (or even after). What helped? Saying yes to opportunities, trying out internships, and getting involved in student orgs.

“You’re not supposed to have it all figured out in one day.”

2. Your Network Matters—Start Building It Now

Networking doesn’t have to be cringey. Think of it as building relationships—with classmates, professors, alumni, and professionals. Platforms like LinkedIn, email outreach, Gator Network and UF’s own events are powerful tools when used intentionally.

“Be genuine. Ask people about their journey—not just for a job.”

3. Portfolios Speak Louder Than Words

No matter your role, having a strong portfolio that reflects your voice and skills can set you apart. From class projects to club work and freelance gigs—capture it all.

“Use your portfolio to tell your story. That’s what employers want to see.”

Tools & Resources They Recommended

Freshman or Transfer? Here’s Where to Start

You don’t need to jump into everything at once. Start small. Go to a meeting. Introduce yourself to a classmate. Ask a professor about their industry experience. The panelists reminded us that freshman year is about exploring—and that’s a strength, not a weakness.

Final Thoughts

One of the most powerful takeaways? Everyone’s path is different—and that’s a good thing. The communications field is full of opportunities for curious, motivated students who are open to exploring, learning, and making connections. Just remember: your story is still unfolding, and that’s where the magic happens.
