This internship article features JP Jon Paul, a junior at the University of Florida studying Finance with a minor in Accounting. He secured a competitive internship with J.P. Morgan Chase in New York, where he gained hands-on experience in corporate banking, financial modeling, and project work across multiple business lines. JP’s story highlights how dedication, consistency, and networking can open doors to meaningful career growth.
How did you learn about the University Recognized Internship (URI), and what motivated you to register your experience?
I am currently a Junior at the University of Florida and am pursuing a BS in Finance with a Minor in Accounting. I found my internship primarily through UF Alumni networking and the FPD program at UF (Commercial and Corporate Banking track).
What steps did you take to find and secure your internship, and how did you decide it was the right fit for you?
I interned at J.P. Morgan Chase in New York, NY as part of the Global Corporate Banking fellowship program. My day-to-day responsibilities included a variety of training sessions (Investment Banking, DCM, ECM, etc.), three LOB (Line of Business) specific projects, and hands-on experience with financial modeling, due diligence, and presentation preparation for senior bankers.
Were there any challenges or doubts you faced during the process, and how did you overcome them?
Throughout my fellowship I learned a multitude of vital skills both Technical (such as credit analysis, modeling, deal structuring) and Professional (such as office etiquette, professional reputation, multi-tasking).
What skills or insights did you gain from your internship that you didn’t expect going in?
I think the biggest personal strengths I brought was my dedication, consistency, and drive. All three of these personal strengths allowed me to handle a multitude of tasks with varying deadlines and succeed in such a fast-paced environment.
What advice would you give to other students who feel unsure or unqualified to pursue internships?
The thing that made my internship so meaningful was the individuals I got to meet and network with throughout. The ability to learn and grow from industry professionals by hearing their unique experiences and perspectives, is something I valued greatly throughout my time at J.P. Morgan and is something I will continue to leverage as I begin my professional career.
