Her story highlighted the power of personal projects—like the 100-Day Project—in shaping her career and reconnecting with her passion for art and mental health advocacy.
  • Dan Adkins described his diverse path, which included music education, an MBA, acting, costume design, songwriting, and eventually coaching presentation skills for entrepreneurs. His story underscored the importance of adaptability and viewing education as a foundation for multiple career directions.

What You’ll Learn

This conversation was packed with insights for students exploring creative careers:

1. Embracing Career Transitions
Both alumni emphasized that career paths are rarely linear. Dan encouraged students to see “failures” as stepping stones and to remain open to unexpected opportunities. Rukmini shared how a personal connection led to a book deal, illustrating the value of staying connected with peers and colleagues.

2. Networking and Authenticity
Networking emerged as a recurring theme. Dan shared how a friend’s recommendation led to a 20-year opportunity in costume design for Dreamgirls. Rukmini stressed the importance of genuine relationships over transactional networking, reminding students that authenticity builds trust and opens doors.

3. Portfolio Development and Passion Projects
Rukmini highlighted how passion projects can set candidates apart. Her 100-Day Project not only showcased her creativity but also demonstrated commitment and consistency—qualities employers value. Both panelists agreed that portfolios matter, but so does the ability to communicate your work effectively.

4. Balancing Passion and Practicality
The panelists offered candid advice on managing financial realities while pursuing creative dreams. Rukmini advised against putting immediate financial pressure on artistic goals, while Dan shared examples of artists who successfully combine day jobs with creative pursuits. Their message: It’s possible to do both.

5. Work-Life Balance and Well-Being
Dan spoke about balancing his business with caring for his mother, reminding students that work-life balance is deeply personal. He cautioned against becoming consumed by work, sharing lessons learned from his own experience completing a challenging musical composition at the expense of his health.
