5 Steps to Start Your Internship Search (Workshop Recap)

Looking for an internship but not sure where to start? The Career Connections Center’s recent Internship Bootcamp (Part 1) walked students through a practical, step-by-step approach to launching their search. Here’s what you need to know:

Start With Self-Reflection (Not Job Boards!)

Before diving into applications, take time to identify:

  • Interests: What energizes you? Think about experiences from the past year that made you feel excited
  • Skills: What do you do well naturally? Review the NACE Career Readiness Competencies
  • Values: What makes work meaningful to you? (helping others, creativity, learning, etc.)

Why this matters: This grounding exercise prevents overwhelm and helps you target opportunities that actually fit you, rather than applying everywhere aimlessly.

Use These Two UF Education Technology Tools

1. What Can I Do With My Major?

Find it on the Career Hub – What Can I Do with My Major?

Use this when you:

  • Need inspiration for career paths connected to your major beyond the “obvious” choices
  • Want to discover industries, employers, and professional associations you hadn’t considered
  • Are looking for major-specific job boards and networking opportunities

2. Labor Market Data Tool

The Labor Market Data Tool

Use this to:

  • Validate your career ideas with real market data (look for 6%+ job growth)
  • Find related job titles to use as search keywords (employers use different terms for similar roles)
  • Identify top employers currently hiring and assess realistic salary ranges

Key Mindset Shifts

  • You don’t need a perfect 10-step plan – you just need a starting point
  • Your major ≠ one job title – it’s a collection of transferable skills
  • 75% of jobs come from the hidden job market, not online postings – so networking is key
  • Every step you take IS a starting point – you’ll learn more as you go

Your Action Plan

  1. Complete the self-reflection exercise
  2. Explore both UF tools using your major/interests
  3. Jot down 2-3 directions that interest you
  4. Identify 3-5 employers to research
  5. Make a tracking spreadsheet and start your weekly plan
