Ready to Shine: Highlights from Our Careers in Communication Prep Workshop

Say you signed up for the career fair but have no idea where to start. Totally normal, don’t stress! The Career Connections Center is here to help. During our workshop, we covered practical, easy-to-use strategies to help you show up confident and employer‑ready on March 10th.

What makes the Careers in Communication Fair so valuable is that it brings in companies who want to meet students like you. They’re genuinely interested in your experiences, your skills, and your potential. And this event is for everyone, whether you’re exploring options or actively job searching.

Panelists Liz Levine (CBS Television Network), Kaitlin Alexander (Charter Schools USA), and Kristin Goins (E.W. Scripps) shared valuable insights into the communications and journalism industry and offered practical advice on how students can stand out to employers.

Key Takeaways

PREPARE

  • Research Employers – Identify your top companies using Gator CareerLink! Liz emphasized the importance of understanding a company’s services, products, and mission. Showing that you’ve done your homework signals to recruiters that you’re engaged, prepared, and genuinely interested in their work.
  • Polish Your Resume – Make sure your resume is up to date and tailored to the roles or programs you’re targeting. Use the A‑T‑R method (Action, Task, Result) to write strong bullet points that clearly demonstrate your impact. Take a look at this video on how to craft a winning resume!
  • Practice Your Introduction – When meeting a recruiter, ease into the conversation before jumping into your 30–60 second elevator pitch. Start with simple, natural questions like, “How is your day going so far?” or “Have you visited UF’s campus before?” Then transition into your pitch once the conversation feels comfortable. Practice until it sounds and feels natural!
  • Dress to Impress – You only get one chance to make a first impression! Wear clean, well‑fitting business professional or business casual attire. If you need clothing or accessories, stop by the Gator Career Closet for a FREE outfit.

CONNECT

  • Keep It Simple – Use clear, everyday language when talking about your skills and experiences. Recruiters may not be experts in your specific field, so simplicity helps them better understand your strengths.
  • SMART Questions – Ask questions that show curiosity and help you learn more about the company, the role, and how you can be the strongest candidate. Thoughtful questions demonstrate preparation, interest, and professionalism.
  • Listen – Treat each conversation as a chance to learn about the company and the people behind it. Pay close attention to what recruiters share, especially about next steps, and follow through promptly.
  • Express Gratitude – Always end the conversation with a genuine “thank you.

Bonus Tip! Kaitlin encouraged students to let their personality shine. There is only one you, and that authenticity is what helps you stand out. Be yourself. Confidence and genuine energy go a long way with employers!

I finished the fair. Now what?

  • Email & Voicemail – Check your email and voicemail regularly in case employers reach out after the fair. Make sure your voicemail greeting sounds professional.
  • Employer-Hosted Events – Keep an eye on Gator CareerLink to see if your favorite employers are returning for info sessions, workshops, or interviews. These follow‑up events are great opportunities to reconnect and continue building relationships.
  • Thank You Notes – Sending a thank you note, whether by email or handwritten, can truly set you apart. Kristin recommends attaching any digital portfolios or work samples you have. It shows initiative, professionalism, and genuine interest in continuing the conversation.

Bonus Tip! Kristin suggested preparing a basic “thank you” email template ahead of time, then personalizing it for each recruiter. Mention one specific detail from your conversation (something they said or shared) to make your message authentic and memorable.
