University Recognized Experiences: Reflection Essay
“My experience: What? So what? Now what?”
Reflection Guide
A reflective essay helps you think about what you experienced, what you learned, and how you’ll use that learning moving forward. It’s personal, honest, and focused on your growth.
What to Pay Attention To
Before and during your experience, notice:
- What you expected vs. what actually happened
- What surprised or challenged you
- What skills you used or developed
- What questions were answered or raised
These observations will help you write a stronger reflection.
How to Write Your Reflection (400–500 words)
Use this simple structure:
- Describe your role: where you worked, what you did, and your main responsibilities.
- Interpret the experience: what met or challenged your expectations, and what moments stood out.
- Evaluate what you learned: skills gained, challenges faced, and meaningful insights (use NACE Competencies as a guide).
- Plan your next steps: how this experience shaped your goals and how you’ll apply what you learned.
Tips for Success
- Use “I” statements — this is about your learning.
