Community Based Learning

The Community Based Experiences (Volunteering) community includes tools and resources to help you explore opportunities that connect your learning to real-world issues, support your growth, and make a positive impact on the communities you care about.

What are Community-Based Experiences

Community Based Experiences are transformative opportunities, bridging the gap between academics and real-world problems. Through volunteering, civic engagement, and service-learning projects, you’ll engage with communities, develop valuable skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the issues that shape our world.

What you gain from Community Based Experiences

Build communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Try out fields and roles that connect with your interests or major.

It encourages you to be an active participant in civic matters, fostering social responsibility and empowering you to make positive contributions.

Meet professionals, mentors, and community members who can support your journey.

Make a difference while working on causes you care about.

Understand social issues and how you can be part of creating change.

Show future employers or grad schools your initiative and community impact.

Gain confidence, perspective, and a better understanding of yourself.

Before You Start, Think About

Think about the issues or communities you’re passionate about—education, health, environment, equity, etc.

Be realistic about your schedule. Some opportunities are one-time events, while others may require weekly involvement.

Are you hoping to volunteer, join a service-learning course, or take on a leadership role in a campus organizations?

Consider if you want to serve in the Gainesville area or explore virtual or international options.

Choose experiences that align with your personal, academic, or career goals.

Make sure you understand the responsibilities, time commitment, and training (if any) before jumping in.

Get Started

Start by reflecting on the issues, populations, or causes that matter most to you—such as education, health, the environment, or social justice. Choosing meaningful causes helps you stay committed and ensures the experience contributes to your personal and career development.

Use Gators for Good to find volunteer and service opportunities on campus and in the local community. Visit Gators for Good to get started and make an impact.

Many student organizations  are dedicated to volunteering or include service as part of their mission. Join a club that aligns with your interests to gain structured experience and connect with like-minded peers. Find them at Gator Connect.

Look beyond campus by reaching out to Gainesville nonprofits, schools, or clinics. Many welcome UF student volunteers. Whether you tutor, assist at a food bank, or support environmental clean-up efforts, these experiences build real-world skills and demonstrate civic engagement. Find these experiences using Gators for Good Network or by attending a Volunteer Networking Fair hosted by Brown Center for Leadership and Service

Take Action

Use the steps below to begin exploring and engaging in meaningful volunteer and service experiences that align with your goals and values.

Reflect on the social issues, communities, or topics you’re passionate about (e.g., education, public health, environmental justice). This will help guide your search for service opportunities that feel personally meaningful.

Check the Experiential Learning Dashboard to explore various opportunities. Use filters to search by experience types, such as research, leadership, volunteering, or creative projects, that align with your career goals and interests.

Visit the Brown Center for Leadership & Service (BCLS) to learn about Gators for Good, Days of Service, and other civic engagement opportunities offered throughout the year.

Browse Gator Connect to find student organizations that include volunteering or civic engagement in their mission. Attend a meeting or event to learn how you can get involved.

Use CareerHub, Gator CareerLink, or reach out directly to Gainesville nonprofits and community partners to explore volunteer openings that fit your schedule and interests. Consider whether you’re open to in-person, virtual, or global service experiences.

As you volunteer, keep a record of your responsibilities, the skills you’re building, and the outcomes of your work. This reflection will help you articulate your impact on resumes, interviews, and grad school applications.

Use the Experiential Learning Student Guide to get the most out of your community-based learning experience by helping you prepare, engage meaningfully, reflect on your impact, and communicate your growth with confidence.
